Week 1

It has been lovely to have the children back in school this week nice and refreshed. We started the week with a celebration for the queens Platinum Jubilee. It was great to see so much red, white and blue. We learnt about the queen and why it was the Jubilee, we made Union Jack bunting, designed our own paper plate for our lunch, and then finished the morning with a whole school Jubilee picnic on the field. All adults are very proud of the Year 1’s this week who have completed the statutory phonics screening, we were so impressed with how much progress they have made this year. In English, we started our new text ‘The Journey' by Aaron Becker. The children were very intrigued as to how we could have a book with no words!

Week 2

This week in year 1/2 we started our Art unit on Vincent Van Gogh. We wrote some facts about him and we created our own version of his painting ‘The Starry Night’. We also recapped our knowledge of primary and secondary colours and developed this further by mixing colours to understand what tertiary colours are. In English we wrote a description of a setting, used speech and thought bubbles all based on our text ‘Journey’. In our maths lessons year one have been learning how to tell the time to o’clock and half past. We wonder if they can practise their knowledge at home. The year two’s have been learning about position and direction. It has been a very hot but busy week!

Week 3

This week in Nightingale we have enjoyed taking part in Art week! We have looked at 3 different artists and recreated some of their artwork. We started the week by drawing and collaging our own versions of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous ‘Sunflowers’ picture, we also looked at pieces of work by Guiseppe Arcimboldo and Paul Cadden. In English, we wrote a diary based on our class text ‘Journey’. Our teachers were really proud of our work. In Maths, the Year 1’s have been learning about money and the Year 2’s have been learning about  mass and capacity

Week 4

This week in Year 1/2 we have been exploring a new story called 'Ocean Meets Sky'. We have been having meaningful discussions about the story, interpreting the title and designing a picture for what we believe the ocean meeting the sky would look like. Following this, we have expanded our descriptive vocabulary and used our ideas to create a setting description. In Design and Technology, we have been learning about moving vehicles, understanding how wheels and axles work and recognising other parts of the vehicle such as the chassis. We had a wonderful time making these as a group and evaluating our designs.

Week 5

This week, we have planned and written about a dream based in three different settings. We have been amazed at how much the children’s writing has developed and they are using many of the skills that we have taught this year, independently. On Tuesday, we had 'Move Up' day and the children demonstrated great resilience towards the changes and returned with great enthusiasm sharing with us everything that they had done. Sports Day was another momentous event this week and we are incredibly proud of each and every child, from supporting each other to persevering even when they were tired and hungry! Finally, the entire week has been 'Health Week' and we have been exploring ways to keep our minds and bodies healthy.

Good Health game and understanding how to eat a balanced diet

Week 6

This week in Nightingale we have been reflecting on the whole year, remembering what we have learnt and celebrating our achievements. We followed these discussions by writing comments for our school reports. In PSHE we have learned the scientific names for our body parts and in RE we talked about different beliefs about God.

What is God like?
