Term 5

This term our learning will be centred around the book 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.

In English, we will create story maps and use our pictures to retell the story. We are going to have a go at writing the story and innovate it to create our own versions. We will focus on writing simple sentences and use our phonic skills to write unfamiliar words. Our daily Sounds Write lessons will continue and we will build on our existing phonic knowledge. Our weekly poems will be based on gardens and growing. We will also be learning new vocabulary as new topic words are introduced each week.

In Maths, we will continue to deepen our understanding of number facts within 10. We will begin to learn about numbers beyond 10 and 20. We will learn how to compare numbers and identify which groups have more and less. We will develop our skills through using practical objects and playing games. We will explore the meaning of subtraction and addition. Our daily counting during the register time will continue.

Look what we have been up to!

Week 5

This week in Reception we have been busy learning about castles. Our teachers set us lots of challenges around the classroom where we had to build castles using junk modelling, wooden bricks and 2D shapes. We have done some Non-fiction writing about castles and painted pictures of them. In Maths we have been developing our understanding of subtraction and using the relevant vocabulary. We also used the iPads and explored drawing castles in a drawing app.

Week 4

In Reception this week we have been learning how to add two numbers together using Numicon. We have finished writing the story of Jack and the Beanstalk – we are so proud of our writing and can’t believe how much we have written over the last few weeks. We have been busy in the Creative Area making paper plate flowers and have put them on the wall for everyone to admire. We have also been creating Lego gardens which we proudly put in our new Model Museum. Finally, we had such a fun day on Tuesday with our scooters and bikes!

Week 3

We have had a very exciting week – we came into school to discover footprints all over our carpet! We have spent a long time thinking about how they got there and we think a Giant has climbed down our beanstalk! We have been busy measuring the footprints with cubes - they are much longer than our own feet! We have been busy planting some beans and are looking forward to watching them grow over the next few weeks. In English we have been writing the next part of the story. We have used our phonic skills to help us write the words we needed

Week 2

This week in English, the children have all tried really hard to write the beginning of the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. I wonder if they can retell it to you! In Maths, we have been exploring making numbers beyond 10 using lots of practical resources to support. We have learnt that numbers are made of tens and ones and we enjoyed playing ‘teen’ Bingo. With the weather getting warmer, we held our PE lesson outside. We were practising our ball rolling skills.

Week 1

It has been a very exciting start to Term 5 in Robin and Wren class.  The children arrived in on Monday to find some beans in the classroom. This inspired the children to do some amazing writing about where they thought the beans might have come from. Then Tuesday the children came to school to find a beanstalk had grown!  The children imagined what they might find at the top of it. We have now started to learn the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and drawn some super story maps.
