Look what we've been up to in Woodpecker Class

Week 1 -

This week we have been looking at seasonal changes and what happens when spring turns into summer. In our Guided Reading lessons, we have started reading a book called ‘Hodgeheg’ by Dick King Smith and we have summarised the first chapter and predicted what will happen next. We have identified the features of instructions and we then wrote our own instructions to make a jam sandwich. This week we have started looking at bat and ball skills in our PE sessions.

Week 2 -

This week we started off our Geography topic by reminding ourselves of the continents and oceans in the world. Maybe your child could tell you them? For the next few weeks we will be pretending that we are going on a safari to the continent Africa to explore the country Kenya. We have found out so far that Kenya it a hot country but has wet and dry seasons not like us in the UK who have 4 seasons. We cannot wait to find out more! In English we started looking at the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. We used the letters to write sentences using conjunctions about how the crayons were feeling. We also pretended to be the crayons and wrote in the present tense about what we like.

Week 3 -

This week we have been continuing to focus on the text ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. We put on our imagination hats and pretended that we were a classroom object such as a glue stick or book and we wrote letters of complaint to Mrs Rhodes about how we were being treated. The Year 2’s worked hard to complete their Reading SAT papers whilst the Year 1’s enjoyed joining forces to have extra phonics practice. In our Geography lessons, we looked at different landscapes in Kenya, used compass directions to navigate around a map and found out about the people and culture of Kenya.

Week 4 -

This week we would like to say a big well done to the Year 2’s for their effort and resilience whilst completing their SATS paper. We are proud of each and every one of you. In writing we have been busy writing an adventure story, a setting description and preparing a question and answer session for our friends. It was lovely to see the children take part in the Walk to School week by decorating their bikes or scooters, some of the Year 1’s had a fantastic time taking part in a scooter safety workshop. We completed our Geography unit of work on Kenya and our very excited for our trip to Longleat next week!

Week 5 -

We had a very exciting week this week. We got to go on a trip to Longleat. The children were extremely well behaved and did Paxcroft proud whilst out of school. For lots of children it was their first experience of going on a coach and a boat. The smiles did not stop all day. We saw many animals that we had talked about in our Geography topic Kenya such as giraffes, lions and Anne the elephant. We thoroughly enjoyed going on the boat and getting the chance to see the sea lions making so much noise, we also saw the gorillas and learnt they are just like humans in many ways! All of the year 1/2 adults were very proud of the children. We would like to say a huge thank you to the adults who volunteered their support, the trip would have been possible without you. We hope they enjoy their well-deserved half term.
