Curriculum Letter
Look what we've been up to in Woodpecker Class
Book Week -
Woodpecker class started the week with a trip to Trowbridge library, where we had some stories read to us and got to explore the library. We paired up with Kestrel class, where the year 5 and 6 children read us some stories. We listened to the MC Grammar's book day rap and guess the story books they he had listed. We finished the week by dressing up as our favourite book characters and parading around the playground with the rest of the school!
Week 1 -
This week, we have had lots of fun exploring healthy food and putting into practise the skills that we need to make a healthy dish. We have been peeling, cutting and grating, fruits and vegetables to make a delicious fruit salad and a yummy wrap. We have also enjoyed a range of activities for book week that included, a walk to the library for Woodpecker and Nightingale and we wrote our own shape poems. We have loved pairing up with the year 5/6 children to read stories.
Week 2 -
The children have worked hard on Reading and Maths assessments. In addition to this, they have learned and put actions to the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk.’ We started a Science unit on materials and the children sorted a variety of everyday objects into the materials they were made from. In PSHE this week, the children thought about why we need to relax and what they could do to relax. The Year 1’s started a new Maths topic about measurement and measured themselves.
Week 3 -
This week we have fully embraced STEM week in year 1/2. We started the week by smashing stereotypes and talking about what a scientist is. The children have been fully engaged in an engineering project of two parts and even created a video presentation about their design. We have lots of engineers in the making and we are very proud of the children.
Week 4 -
This week in Woodpecker we wrote the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We were very impressed with how the children’s writing is improving. Can you spot your child's writing in the photos?
In Science, we grouped materials in a variety of ways and went out into the school grounds to look for different materials in our everyday environment. In PSHE, we sorted food into the five food groups. It was great to see that the children had retained the information from a previous term’s learning.
Week 5 -
This week the children have innovated the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ by changing the character, the thing sold, the plant that grew, the character in the clouds and the object sold. In Science lessons, the children conducted an experiment to investigate the best material for a roof for ‘Teddy’s’ Lego house. Additionally, they tested how to change the shape of materials by bending, stretching, squashing or twisting them. In Maths lessons, the Year 2’s have been learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and the Year 1’s have started a unit on Weight and Mass.
Week 6 -
We started off the week with a trip to St Thomas’ Church and we learnt a lot about the Easter story. We were fortunate enough to receive a palm cross, which we then used to re-enact the Easter story. We talked about the symbols of Easter and even got to taste a hot cross bun. In maths, year 1’s has been learning about capacity and volume, Year 2’s has been learning about fractions. We finished off the week with a Easter egg hunt on the fast playground, and our class reward watching the film Hop.
