Term 4

This term:

In English

We are looking at the books:

  • The Gingerbread Man

  • Three Billy Goats Gruff

  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears

  • Cinderella

  • Jack and the Beanstalk

  • The three little pigs

  • Little red riding hood

This term, we are continuing the Talk for Writing project which is based on the story ‘The Gingerbread Man’. The children will learn to retell the story using actions and focus on using story language. This term, the children will be innovating the story, changing the characters that the Gingerbread Man meets on his journey. Using Story Mountains, the children will then write their own version of the story.

Throughout the term, we will be sharing several traditional tales. If you have one at home and would like to bring it in, please ensure that it is named.

We will continue to follow the Sounds Write phonics programme. They will be learning some new sounds and working on their consolidation of the ones already learnt. We will also continue to blend and segment these sounds to read and write words. The children will really benefit from practising this skill at home by completing the fortnightly homework activity and regular reading. Weekly, children will be provided with opportunities for free and structured writing.

In Mathematics:

This term we will consolidate our counting skills. We are going to count to larger numbers and develop a wider range of counting strategies. We will secure our knowledge of number facts. We are going to explore the meaning of 1 more and 1 less up to 10. We will begin to look at the 10s frame and explore ways of making doubles. We are going to be comparing quantities and numbers and we will continue to subitise and begin to identify when counting is necessary. Once again we will be encouraged to use sentence stems when explaining our answers.

Look what we've been up to in Owls

Week 1 -

We have had a great start to the new term. We have launched off our new topic on Traditional Tales by mixing flour, butter, sugar and ginger – we made gingerbread! Our super starter this term was making (and tasting) gingerbread men. It was lovely to see how excited the children got to use our DT room for the first time and experience a range of baking skills. In Literacy, we have been learning the story of The Gingerbread Man with actions using a story map. In maths, we have been counting forwards and backwards to 20 and understanding the 6,7, 8 and 9 is made up of 5 and a bit.

Week 2 -

This week in Owls class we were very lucky to have to have a visitor from Wiltshire and Dorset Fire Service who came in to teach us all about fire safety. We learnt about what the fire brigade do, how we can say safe around fire as well as some children got to try on the fire fighters uniforms. In Literacy, we have been writing our innovated stories of the Gingerbread Man, some children wrote 1 sentence, some wrote 2 and some children chose to write the whole story. We were very proud! In Maths we have been learning to order numbers to 10.

Week 3 -

We have been very resilient in Owls class this week, as we have had a few changes of adults but all children have taken to it well. We had a fantastic World Book Day yesterday where we learnt about the author Julia Donaldson. We got to hear and watch some of her stories. Our favourite was The Gruffalo! In Literacy, we have been using our imaginations to pretend we are in a picture of a castle and we have used our senses to write about it. The children had some great ideas.

Week 4 -

This week in Owls class we have been focusing on our Maths skills and learning how to double numbers. We have learnt the new vocabulary ‘equal and doubling’. We now know that we have make sure the numbers are equal to be able to double them. In PSHE, we have been talking about how everyone’s families are different. We made a pictogram of all our class pets. We have also been reading the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and talking about stranger danger, and thinking about why Little Red shouldn’t have spoken to the wolf.

Week 5 -

This week in Owls class we have been looking at the story ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. In Literacy, we have been pretending to be Goldilocks and have written letters to the three bears saying sorry for all the naughty things we did in their cottage. The children have loved putting their imagination hats on and getting into character to do this. In Maths, we have been learning about odd and even numbers, maybe you can ask your child at home what they are. In PE this week we had great fun doing some relaxing Yoga but also jumping and dancing around to Kids Zumba’s. Our favourite one was the Minions!
