Term 4

In Term 4, our geographical enquiry will focus on Trowbridge, where we are in the World and how we connect to other places, both in the UK and abroad. We will be exploring the regions and counties of the UK, developing our locational knowledge and  ability to use a range of maps, including digital maps.  We plan to investigate how Trowbridge may change in the future and what amenities our local community would like to see develop. In DT, we will be sampling a range of pizzas, conducting surveys into consumers' views and making our own too!

In Science and PSHE,  we will be  studying healthy lifestyle choices and how exercise impacts our physical and mental wellbeing.

An annual favourite, Book Week, takes place in the second week of term and we will be studying Shakespeare's Macbeth. We will be  recreating some key scenes from the play and  writing in different genres, based on the play.

In English, we will continue to read  Goodnight Mr Tom, and  the supplementary text of Carrie's War.

Week 5

Year 5/6 had a lively start to the week with our outdoor learning day, which the children thoroughly enjoyed, despite the inclement weather. We took part in a range of outdoor activities, which included a Spring scavenger hunt, den building, bug hunting and a number of games. The children also learned about different types of nests and worked together in groups to create their own. In English, we have started a new unit of work on Biographies. We have investigated the structure of a good example and have written an introduction. Year 5 are extending their knowledge and understanding of Place Value to include thousandths as decimals and fractions whilst Year 6 have been investigating the relationship between fractions decimals and percentages and finding percentages of amounts. In our Topic work, we have been using World Mapper, looking at Cartograms, investigating how this type of map can answer a range of questions when contrasted with a standard map.

Week 4

This week in 5/6 we were delighted to welcome the Mayor, Councilor Graham Hill, to our school. He gave an extremely interesting talk about Trowbridge, how it developed and became the County town. His talk also covered how local government functions, including how to become the mayor and mayoral duties. Councilor Graham also spoke about how the town may change in the future and the plans to build several thousand new homes on what is now green fields. Councilor Graham said how impressed he was by the questions the children asked which showed great knowledge and understanding of environmental and conservation issues. In English, we have started writing and editing our hot task narrative set in the Blitz.

Week 3

We've had a cold (and snowy) week in Year 5/6 this week. We have continued to learn about out local area through our topic Our Country, Our World, Our Universe, looking at key local area spots and locating them on OS maps. We are looking forward to having the mayor in next week to discuss the changes happening in Trowbridge in the future. We had our RE morning this week, where we learnt about the Christian story of Easter. We discussed symbolism and made comparisons about Jesus to other characters from stories. In English, we have been continuing to explore writing descriptive passages, looking at how we can use really effective language to engage our readers. In PE, we have been learning about key skills to play tennis and practising our techniques with a racket.

Week 2

We have had a very exciting week in Year 5/6. We started the week as detectives, investigating the murder of a King and visiting the crime scene. After reading various witness statements and writing a police report, we uncovered the shocking truth about Macbeth and his part in the murder. We have been turning parts of Shakespeare’s Scottish play into narrative writing, focusing on building suspense and atmosphere and have even brought some key scenes to life through drama and role play. In our topic work we have continued to develop our geographical skills through the use of map work. It was lovely to see so many of the children come back for Book at Bedtime on Tuesday and seeing the fantastic costumes to celebrate World Book Day today.

Week 1

It has been a busy start to the term this week in Year 5 and 6. We have made a start on our new topic, Our Country, Our World, Our Universe, thinking about our place in the world and where we are located within the UK. Along with using Google Maps to find our way around locations, we have been getting to grips with grid references and using them to locate places on ordnance survey maps. In English, we have been developing our sentence structures and looking at ways to vary our narrative writing in preparation for our Blitz stories that we will be writing in the coming weeks.
