Week 1:

Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful summer break.  It has been lovely to see the new Year 3/4 children in Swift, Housemartin and Skylark this week. They have already started working hard and we are looking forward to the fun and exciting things to come. Your child will be provided with a reading book and spellings list shortly, please could you help them to practise at home.  Our Topic work for this term will be based on ‘Trailblazers’. We will be learning about a variety of inspirational people from the past and present.  We look forward to meeting you all on Monday.

Week 2:

At the start of the week we had our meet the teacher meeting, which we hope helped parents start to get a good feel for year 3 and 4. Thank you to those who came, it was lovely to see so many of you! During our learning this week, we started our 'writing to entertain' unit in English and looked at the features of a setting description. As well as this, we have been revisiting and improving our writing basics. In Maths, we began learning about place value and have developed our understanding of 100s and 1000s. We also had our RE day on Wednesday, which saw us learning about Christianity and how Christians follow Jesus. We also explored what it means to have faith and the influence of inspirational leaders. Well done Year 3/4, a great second week back at school! Just a little reminder, our first batch of spellings will be sent out on Monday.

Week 3:

In Week 3 of our learning, we our carrying on with the 'Writing to Entertain' unit in English and have looked at different techniques to improve the structure of our writing. We continue to revisit our writing Non-Negotiables (capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and re-reading for sense) to embed these in the children’s writing. In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting 1s ,10s, 100s and 1000s to and from a given number as well identifying numbers to 10,000 on a number line. All classes have started their Science this term which is about ‘Living things and their Habitats’ and are enjoying grouping and classifying animals. Well done year 3/4!

Week 4:

It’s been another busy week in Swift, Skylark and Housemartin.  We have come to the end of our Place Value unit in Maths and are now ready to move on to Addition and Subtraction. In English, the children have written setting descriptions based on a land they have invented.  We have continued to find out about inspirational people in our topic lessons and are enjoying making a variety of sculptures from card, in Art.  In French we are learning about the weather and seasons – ask your child to tell you something in French.

Week 5:

As always it has been a busy and exciting week in Year 3/4. We have started our new ‘writing to persuade’ unit in English, which the children have been really enjoying. We apologise in advance for how persuasive they are about to become! We have continued to look at the impressive work of influential trailblazers in Topic and been developing our ability to classify animals in Science. In Art, we have been finishing and drawing our sculptures. Thank you again for all the cardboard boxes that you kindly provided us with. The children have been good at thinking outside of the box and being creative. We look forward to seeing you all at Parent’s Evening next week to discuss how your child has go on this term.

Week 6:

This week we have been celebrating Hello Yellow for World Mental Health Day in Year 3/4. It certainly brightened up the classrooms. In our ‘writing to persuade’ unit in English, we have been learning about rhetorical questions, imperative verbs and alliteration. If you’re not sure what these mean, please ask your children. In Maths, we are beginning to add 3-digit and 4-digit numbers and carrying over to the next place value column. In Art, we have learnt about positive and negative spaces within sculpture and how to improve and evaluate them. We will be sending these home, so be prepared!
