Phonics

Early Reading is taught through a Synthetic Systematic Phonics Programme. This is a structured approach to teaching children to read by supporting children to learn the relationships between the sounds (phonemes) of spoken language and the letter symbols (graphemes) of the written language.

At Paxcroft, children take part in a 30 minute daily phonics sessions using the Sounds-Write Programme. They learn the single letter sounds in Reception before moving on to sounds made with 2 two or more letters. Children are taught to blend sounds to build words from the very start and every session involves an element of reading and writing.

Children at the end of year 1 will take part in a Phonics Screening Check to ensure they are making sufficient progress with their phonic skills and are on track to become fluent readers.
