Term 5

Welcome back to a brand-new Term. We hope you had a wonderful Easter break. We are looking forward to another jam-packed term full of exciting learning opportunities.

Topic

Our topic for this term continues to be: Our Country, Our World Our Universe.  This is centred around the geographical enquiry question: How is our region connected with the rest of the UK, to Europe and the rest of the world? We will also look at how our nation is governed and explore the institutions of democracy and Parliament. We will explore the political and trade links between the UK and Europe before zooming out to investigate the Universe through a more scientific lens. We are very excited to have our local MP and a local Councillor visit school where the children will have the opportunity to ask challenging questions about a range of issues.

History

As the nation prepares to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ day, we will also be learning about these incredibly significant events and what they meant to our families. We will be looking at primary and secondary resources to help us better understand their significance and how people rejoiced and celebrated. We will also have discussions about why it is important to remember those who served.

In Art, we will complete a unit of work called Sculpture and 3D making memories. In this unit, the children will create sculptures and reflect on how to create and express memories through a range of media.

In Science, we will be investigating Earth, our solar system and space.

Our English this term will be based on the book ‘Curiosity’, which tells the story of the Mars rover from a first- person perspective. We will be writing in a range of genres including newspaper reports, explanation recount and discussion texts, as well as completing other response writing. We will also continue to explore spelling patterns and hone our grammar skills.

w.b 28th April

In English this week, we have been writing newspaper reports about the historic Apollo Mission when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin lanIed Eagle on the moon. We have also practised grammar skills. In Maths, we have been revising aspects of Shape: translation and reflection as well as exploring Algebra. We have been investigating function machines and writing expressions. In our topic work, we have learned what GDP is, our major trading partners and what we import from them.

WB 9th May

It has been a very busy, if shorter week in Year 5/6. In English, we have finished reading Curiosity and have written a book review, recommending the book. We have also written diary entries, in the role as Scientists back at the Space Centre watching the nail-biting final approach of the Mars Rover. In Maths, we have continued to revise key concepts in readiness for the SATs next week. To commemorate VE Day 80 years on, we have been using primary and secondary sources to learn about this incredible milestone in our history. We are looking forward to seeing as many of the Year 6 children as possible at the SATs breakfast club in the hall next week. Whilst orders are now closed for cooked options, cereal and toast will still be available (and we’re sure there will be some spare sausages somewhere!) All Y6 are welcome whether they have booked or not. Diary dates from January 202
