Term 4

This term:

In Literacy:

We are looking at the books, ‘A New House for Mouse by Petr Horacek’ and ‘My pet Goldfish by Catherine Rayner’ where we will be thinking and talking confidently about responses to a books, asking questions and making connections with their own experiences. We will be exploring the text through collaborative play; role play and storytelling.

In Sounds-Write the children will be learning to blend, segment and sound manipulate words with the VCC (e.g ant), CVCC (e.g. pond), CCVC (e.g drum), CCVCC (e.g. shrimp) and CCCVC (e.g. strap) format. There will be no new sounds this term but it is key that you continue to work with your child daily to support them with their reading. The children will really benefit from practising this skill at home by completing the fortnightly homework activity and regular reading. Weekly, the children will be provided with opportunities for free and structured writing.

Throughout the term, we will be sharing serval traditional tales. If you have one at home and would like to bring it in, please ensure that it is named.

In Mathematics:

This term we will be learning how to partition the numbers 5 and 10. This will be linked into the Early Learning Goal of being able to recall all numbers bonds to 5 and some number bonds to 10. We will then move on to the composition of the numbers 6-9. As well as starting to learn how to compare numbers to 10.

Look what we've been up to in Owls

Week 1 -

It has been lovely to have the children back this week and hearing about what they got up to in half term. We have launched our new topic ‘Traditional Tales’ this week by reading and retelling the story, The Gingerbread Man. We also got a chance to make and try our own gingerbread men. We helped with the weighing, mixing, rolling and cutting. In Literacy, we have started to look at the book ‘New House for Mouse’ where we have been discussing what animals live in holes. In Maths, we have been learning to recap how to partition 2 and 3 and then learning to partition 4. We also started our gymnastics unit in PE where we were learning to travel in different ways with control.

Week 2 -

This week in Literacy all the children have impressed us with their fantastic independent story writing of ‘A New House for Mouse’. We have been retelling the story using a story map and then writing a sentence for the first three parts of the story. In Maths, we have been recalling number bonds to 5. In Understanding the World, we have learnt about different types of maps, and we got to look at different places on Google Maps. In Music, we have been keeping in time with the beat and we got to use the glockenspiels. It was of course very lovely to see all the children dressed up as their favourite book characters for World Book Day!

Week 3 -

This week in Literacy we introduced our new book ‘My Pet Goldfish’ by Catherine Rayner. The children have been discussing what they think the story might be about and who the characters are. The children have also started to write a sentence all about their own pets or imaginary pets. In Maths, we have continued to learn to recall our number bonds to 5. This week is British Science week, so we linked our Traditional Tales topic to this and the story ‘The Billy Goats Gruff’, where we looked at different types of bridges and the types of materials they are made with. The children then made some great bridges out of different resources in the classroom.

Week 4 -

We started this week by reading the traditional tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We used this story to think about stranger danger and how Little Red should not have spoken to the wolf. We spoke about how if we are lost, we could go to a safer stranger (someone who is in a uniform and has a badge) or a safer building (like a supermarket or police station). In Literacy, we have continued learning about goldfish. We learnt that goldfish can only remember things for up to five months. We all found it a bit weird that if we were fish, we wouldn’t even remember starting school!

Week 5 -

This week in Owls, we have continued our work around the story ‘My Pet Goldfish’. We looked at goldfish and learnt some facts. We have even been super-brilliant writers, and we have drawn and labelled our own pictures of goldfish. In Maths, we have been looking at the number of bonds to 10. We have also been exploring more than, less than and equal amounts. At the start of the week, we went on a nature walk and made nature bracelets. We hope to get a closer look at our school pond before the week is through. The children have also been wowing us with their home learning based on traditional tales. Keep them coming in!
